Rent one that’s too small and you’re paying for a second haul-away; rent one that’s too big and you’ve paid for space you never used. This guide walks you through every roll-off size we carry, what each one is best for, and the one mistake that trips people up more than any other.
First, how dumpster sizes actually work
Roll-off dumpsters are measured in cubic yards — the volume of debris they hold, not their footprint or weight. A “20-yard” dumpster holds about 20 cubic yards of material, roughly the equivalent of six to eight pickup-truck loads. The bigger the number, the more it holds.
But here’s the part most sizing guides skip: volume and weight are two different limits, and you can hit either one first. Every dumpster comes with an included weight allowance (measured in tons). Light, bulky debris like furniture, cardboard, and drywall fills up the space long before it gets heavy. Dense material like concrete, dirt, brick, tile, and roofing shingles does the opposite — it can max out the weight allowance while the box still looks half empty. A closer look at each size
10-yard dumpster — small, focused jobs
The 10-yard dumpster is our most compact option, and it fits easily in a single driveway. It’s ideal for a garage, basement, or attic cleanout, a small bathroom remodel, or a roofing tear-off up to about 1,500 square feet. Because it also handles heavy debris well within its weight allowance, it’s often the right call for concrete, dirt, or brick even though it looks small.
15-yard dumpster — the in-between
Need a little more room without jumping to a large container? The 15-yard dumpster is built for whole-room cleanouts, kitchen and bathroom renovations, and flooring or deck removal. It’s the sweet spot for mid-size projects that would overflow a 10-yard but don’t need a 20.
20-yard dumpster — the most popular choice
The 20-yard dumpster is the size most people land on. It handles whole-home cleanouts, large renovations, and roofing jobs over 2,000 square feet, while still keeping a manageable footprint. If you’re genuinely torn between two sizes for a general cleanout or remodel, the 20-yard is usually the safe bet.
30-yard dumpster — big projects
For estate cleanouts, major renovations and additions, or new construction, the 30-yard dumpster gives you serious capacity for bulky debris without stepping all the way up to the largest container.
40-yard dumpster — the largest we carry
The 40-yard dumpster is our biggest roll-off, built for full building cleanouts and large-scale construction and demolition. It’s the go-to for contractors moving high volumes of lightweight, bulky material. The mistake that costs people money: weight vs. volume
Remember that included weight allowance? Here’s where it bites. A cubic yard of concrete weighs about as much as a compact car. Load a large dumpster with nothing but concrete, dirt, brick, or tile and you’ll blow past the weight limit while the container still looks mostly empty — and that overage gets billed per ton on top of your base price.
So the counterintuitive rule for heavy debris is: go smaller, not bigger. A 10- or 20-yard dumpster is usually the right choice for concrete, masonry, and heavy roofing, because you’ll reach the weight cap long before you run out of space. Save the 30- and 40-yard containers for lighter, bulkier loads like household junk, furniture, and construction framing.
